Discription

Growth Form: Monoecious tree that can grow up to a height of 30 m. An evergreen tree in humid tropics but semi-deciduous in monsoon climate. 5 – 8 m tall, trunk can reach a diameter of 0.6 – 1.8 m.

 

Foliage: alternate, ovate to elliptical.

Flower: Inflorences axillary, male flower drooping, shaped like a club and the female flower stiffly upright, globose or cylindrical.

 

Fruits: immature or ripe, and seeds are boiled, baked, roasted or fried before consuming.

Habitat

Cultivated and naturalized in the warm and very humid lowlands in house gardens, active and old plantations, agroforestry systems, disturbed secondary forests, forest edges, roadsides, and coastal forests. This species grows best in lowlands at elevations from sea level to 650 m, but it is occasionally found in highlands up to 1550 m.
